A Town Shaped by History
Wokingham is a historic Berkshire market town with roots dating back over 800 years. Originally established on the edge of Windsor Forest, it developed as a centre for local trade and craftsmanship, shaped by centuries of market life, local industry, a strong sense of community and a passion for art.
From its medieval origins to its present-day role as a thriving town, once famous for having the most pubs per head population and more recently considered amongst the happiest and healthiest place to live in the UK. Wokingham has retained its charm through traditional architecture, a long-established Market Place, independent shops, and accessible green spaces woven into the town centre. Its historic street layout and familiar landmarks give Wokingham a distinct identity, where heritage and everyday life sit comfortably side by side.
Wokingham En Plein Air is an outdoor painting event that invites artists to create artwork of their chosen location, in situ and in their style. 47 beautiful, scenic, picturesque and often historic locations are available, accommodating up to 119 Artists throughout Wokingham town centre and surrounding green spaces.
This amazing event is open to artists of all levels, from beginners to professionals. The focus is on observation, atmosphere, and the experience of responding to place — With the added energy that comes from many artists working across the town at the same time. The emphasis is on experiencing the very best of scenic Wokingham, steeped in history, and having fun along the way. What an absolute buzz, and it’s only available via this event!
Following 6.5 hours of painting, Artists will exhibit their artwork to the public in Market Place next to the Town Hall for 2 hours, during which judges will assess each piece and select those for an award. This is where the public will also select their ‘People’s Choice’ for a prize. As they say, it’s not about the winning – It’s about the taking part! Though £2,000 in cash prizes, interacting with potential customers and the opportunity to secure a sale is motivation enough to be creative!
A detailed location map and list of painting locations is provided below. All painting locations have been carefully selected to offer a broad mix of architectural views, historic buildings and streets, parks and natural scenery, popular with Wokingham’s residents and it’s many visitors.
About the Event
In collaboration with the Wokingham Town Council and local partners, Wokingham town centre is set to play host to Wokingham En Plein Air 2026 – the town's first and largest outdoor painting competition and street gallery.
Wokingham En Plein Air is the town’s largest and most exciting art competition. It will take place on Saturday14th June across locations in and around Wokingham town centre.
Wokingham En Plein Air aims to bring artists into the heart of the town to celebrate its streets, green spaces, and local character. Designed to be welcoming and inclusive, the event encourages artists of all abilities to connect with the town, its people, and its creative spirit, while introducing residents and visitors to the joy of painting outdoors.
Wokingham En Plein Air is planning for 122 artists to create their own masterpieces within a 6-hour time frame across 49 locations throughout the town.

First Prize – £1,000
Second Prize – £500
Third Prize – £250
People’s Choice Award – £250
On the day, artists bring their canvases or paper, painting materials, and an easel. Registration takes place at R Young Art Gallery, where all painting media are stamped by the event team before artists head to their pre-selected painting locations. Locations are chosen at the time of ticket purchase, allowing artists to plan ahead of the event.
Street Exhibition
Having completed their work, artists are invited to exhibit their piece as part of an open-air pop-up exhibition in the heart of Wokingham's town centre, where the public will have the opportunity to see and buy the work. The exhibition opens at 4.00pm with judging by a panel of experts followed by the prize-giving at 6.00pm.
